How Did Pioneers Travel?
Most pioneers traveled in a Conestoga wagon, spring wagon or a covered wagon. Lots of pioneers chose oxen to lead the wagon instead of mules or horses because oxen were a lot stronger and the stronger the better for the pioneers. The pioneers would buy up to 4 oxen PER wagon! That’s a lot of oxen but the pioneers needed it for their long journey to the west, this was hard work for the pioneers because they spent a lot of money on the oxen and then they had to take care of the oxen too, but this was life for the pioneers and if one of the wheels on the wagon were to break, just call the men because they had to fix it!

What were some dangers pioneers faced on the trail?
Pioneers faced many dangers on the trail like indians, storms, diseases, fierce animals, rivers, and robbers. Many of the indians were not friendly at all, they would try and steal cattle and horses from the pioneers. The pioneers also lost livestock to coyotes and other predators, and that was devastating for the pioneers because they needed livestock, thats why the pioneers would have guards who stayed up all night and watched the livestock to make sure it was safe. Many rivers were very difficult to cross, some rivers were very deep and muddy so pioneers couldn't get across and that caused some big problems. Grass fires were also a constant threat to the pioneers so they had to be extra careful! So were runaway oxen because without oxen they couldn't move the wagon because the oxen would drive the wagon, so the pioneers had to be extra careful and make sure their oxen was safe and close. One of the worst things that could happen to the pioneers was if a wagon wheel were to break or an axle were to break and the pioneers did not have another! The pioneers also had to be careful if a storm came because lightning could hit the wagon and it would then catch on fire!

What Were The Wagons like that pioneers traveled in?
The pioneers traveled in a wagon called a covered wagon. The wagon would usually be made out of hickory, oak, or maple, those wagons were built to be really sturdy. To pioneers wagons were very important because they needed a wagon to carry all their personal belongings and supplies, but a wagon couldn’t carry more than 2,000 pounds! Wagons had big wooden hoops, those were called bows that were bent from side to side. There would be 4 to 7 of the wooden hoops called bows per wagon. Incase it rained there was a big canvas that pulled across the hoops that would keep out the rain, wind and the hot sunshine which was very common. Pioneers would rub oil on the canvas, that way it would make the canvas waterproof. Pioneers had to do a lot of work and it was tiring for them like making sure they had everything they needed in a wagon

What Food And Supplies Did Pioneers Take With Them?
Pioneers would take as many supplies and food as they could! Some foods they would take with were: yeast for baking, crackers, bacon, cornmeal, eggs, dried meat, rice beans, potatoes and barrels of water! Pioneers would even take chocolate for special occasions. Seems like a lot to carry, pioneers had to take all this food but at least they didn’t have to carry it because it was put in the wagon. Pioneers also took supplies for repairing, some supplies included: needles, threads, pins, scissors, and leather, so the pioneer woman could fix worn out shoes. The pioneer men had to take a lot of tools with them because the men had to do all the repairing: some of the tools the pioneer men took with them included axes, saws, hammers, nails, string, and knives. Therefore the pioneer men took all of their tools because they had to do their own repairs, and the woman took all of their supplies for repairing clothing such as shoes, dresses etc. Source:http://library.thinkquest.org/6400/
What Were The Personal Items Pioneers Took With Them?
Pioneers also had to bring their own personal items once they were going to be living in a new place. Some of the pioneers personal items were: dolls for the little girls, jump ropes, marbles, the family bible which was really important because most pioneers were religious people, books, hunting knife, their bag of all their clothes, the fiddle, snow shoes, riffles, and of course pioneers brought their own first aid kit! Pioneers had many things to take with them, good thing they had wagons or else the pioneers wouldn’t make it because of the long way they had to travel and carrying all their belongings on their back… they probably wouldn’t make it past three miles!
